How to import building materials

To import construction materials to the US, you source a factory, inspect the goods, book ocean or air freight, file the customs entry and Importer Security Filing, pay duties and fees, then truck the goods to your site. GCP Source & Ship handles each step in-house. Budget with landed cost: product price plus freight, insurance, duties, brokerage, port fees and delivery.

Can I import building materials from China?

Yes. The steps are the same from any origin country: source and vet a factory, inspect before shipping, book freight, file the ISF and customs entry, and pay duties. Duty rates depend on the product's Harmonized Tariff Schedule classification and its country of origin, and some products from some countries carry extra tariffs that change with trade policy.

What US customs fees apply to imported materials?

Besides duties, formal entries pay the Merchandise Processing Fee of 0.3464% of value, with a minimum of $34.58 and a maximum of $670.86 per entry (from October 1, 2026). Ocean cargo also pays the Harbor Maintenance Fee of 0.125% of value, with no cap. A licensed customs broker files the entry and charges per entry.

When is the Importer Security Filing due?

For ocean shipments, the ISF, often called 10+2, must reach US Customs at least 24 hours before the cargo is loaded at the foreign port. The deadline is measured against loading, not departure. Late or wrong filings can bring $5,000 per violation. A forwarder or broker usually files it, but the importer is responsible.

Is importing worth it for a single home?

Importing usually pays off for volume orders, such as a full container for a development or several homes, and for custom products that are costly or slow to get domestically. For a single kitchen or a few windows, buying in the US is often close in price once freight, duties, brokerage and damage risk are counted.
