The short answer
A new entry door costs about $595 to $3,000 installed in Atlanta, a sliding patio door $1,000 to $3,400, and a garage door $595 to $3,000. In this metro, rain and old frames matter as much as door style. Check that the sill sheds water and the frame behind the trim is not rotten.

What door installation costs in Atlanta
The price table adjusts national installed prices for Atlanta. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers puts construction costs in the Atlanta area at 0.85 times the national average, so a door that costs $2,000 to install in an average US city costs less here.
| Job | Atlanta (typical range) | US average |
|---|---|---|
| Entry door, installed | $595–$3,000 | $700–$3,500 |
| Double entry doors, installed | $1,300–$5,550 | $1,500–$6,500 |
| Patio sliding door | $1,000–$3,400 | $1,200–$4,000 |
| French doors | $1,100–$4,700 | $1,300–$5,500 |
| Multi-slide or bi-fold door | $4,250–$17,000 | $5,000–$20,000 |
| Garage door | $595–$3,000 | $700–$3,500 |
| Storm door | $340–$935 | $400–$1,100 |
| Interior door, installed | $100–$485 | $120–$570 |
| New door frame | $110–$510 | $130–$600 |
Estimates for 2026, including labor and standard parts. Atlanta prices use the metro's construction cost factor of 0.85 (US average = 1.00) from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Area Cost Factors. Your quote depends on access, materials and the condition of the home.
The entry door line covers a standard pre-hung door in an existing opening. Material changes the price a lot. Steel costs the least, fiberglass is in the middle, and solid wood costs the most.
Things that raise a door quote in Atlanta:
- A wider opening. Going from a single door to a double door, or from a slider to a multi-slide wall, means a new header and plan review.
- Sidelights and glass. More glass means more safety glazing and a higher-rated unit.
- Rot at the sill or frame. Atlanta rain and old trim are a bad pair, and a new frame adds $110 to $510 at Atlanta prices.

Door types for Atlanta homes
| Door | Atlanta installed price | What to know here |
|---|---|---|
| Entry door, single | $595 to $3,000 | Glass must be safety glazed; check historic review on an intown house |
| Double entry doors | $1,300 to $5,550 | Usually means a wider opening and plan review |
| Sliding patio door | $1,000 to $3,400 | A same-size swap is the simplest permit case |
| French doors | $1,100 to $4,700 | Needs swing space and a sill that sheds summer storms |
| Multi-slide or bi-fold | $4,250 to $17,000 | Needs a structural header for the wide opening |
| Garage door | $595 to $3,000 | Opener must reverse; the house door needs a fire rating |
| Storm or screen door | $340 to $935 | Light-duty, often on a back or side door |
| Interior door | $100 to $485 | The garage-to-house door has its own rules |
Entry doors
Fiberglass resists dents and can look like wood. Steel costs the least. Wood suits the Craftsman and bungalow houses in Decatur and intown Atlanta but needs refinishing. Our entry doors guide covers materials and hardware. Atlanta gets about 50.43 inches of rain a year and 47 days at 90°F or hotter (NOAA NCEI normals), so a west-facing dark door takes a beating. Ask what the finish warranty covers for sun and rain.
Patio, French and multi-slide doors
A sliding door saves floor space. French doors give a wide traditional opening. Multi-slide or bi-fold doors can open most of a wall. Compare them in our guides to patio doors, French doors and multi-slide doors. Rain falls all year here: July averages 4.75 inches, March 4.68 and January 4.59 (NOAA NCEI). A wide door with a flush threshold needs a sill pan, flashing and drainage that can handle a heavy summer storm. Ask how the installer will handle water at the bottom of the opening.
Garage doors
A garage door often returns more than it costs at sale. Our garage doors guide covers materials and openers. Two federal rules apply to every install: the opener must reverse, and the door from the garage into the house is a fire separation.
Glass in doors: safety rules
The Georgia residential code follows the International Residential Code, which treats glass in any swinging, sliding or bifold door as a hazardous location, so it must be tempered or laminated safety glass. Small openings that a 3-inch ball cannot pass through and decorative glass are exempt. Glass within 24 inches of either side of a door, with its bottom edge less than 60 inches above the floor, also needs safety glass. Sidelights next to an entry door usually fall under that second rule. Georgia adopted the 2024 IRC, IBC and related codes effective January 1, 2026 (Georgia DCA), so a permit pulled now is reviewed under the 2024 edition.
Storm, wind and ice exposure in Atlanta
Atlanta sits far enough inland that hurricane wind ratings do not apply here. The local weather risk is severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and ice.
- The March 14, 2008 downtown tornado was an EF2 with peak winds near 130 mph. It tracked 6 miles through the city, damaged at least 50 homes, and blew out windows in the towers (NWS Peachtree City).
- The January 2005 ice storm brought down tree limbs and power lines and knocked out power to more than a quarter of a million customers (NWS Peachtree City).
- Hurricane Helene in September 2024 dropped 12 to 13 inches on the metro, and floodwaters entered at least 200 homes and buildings in greater Atlanta (NHC report).
For a door, that means a storm door or entry door that faces the weather should have a solid frame, a working weatherstrip and a threshold that drains. On a patio door, the flashing and sill pan matter more than the door slab. If a tree limb takes out a door, your homeowner policy usually covers the repair. Document the damage with photos before anything is removed.
Garage door rules
Auto-reverse
Federal rules require automatic residential garage door openers to meet entrapment protection standards, which make the door stop and reverse. After installation, the installer should test the reversing function and the photo eyes in front of you.
The door between the garage and the house
The door from an attached garage into the house is a fire separation. The code allows a solid wood or steel door at least 1 3/8 inches thick, or a 20-minute fire-rated door, and it must be self-closing and self-latching. No door may open from a garage straight into a bedroom. A hollow-core interior door does not qualify, so check this when you replace it.
Do you need a permit for a new door in Atlanta?
It depends on which city or county issues the permit for your address. Inside a city, the city issues permits. In unincorporated areas, the county does. Check the parcel's jurisdiction first.
| Job | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Swap a door in the same opening, same type | Often no permit, or a simple over-the-counter permit; ask your city |
| Widen an opening for double, French or multi-slide doors | Building permit with plan review for the new header |
| Replace a garage door | Usually no building permit; the opener still must reverse |
| Exterior door in an Atlanta historic or landmark district | Certificate of Appropriateness before the permit |
| Door on a house in unincorporated Cobb or DeKalb | County permit; check the jurisdiction map first |
City of Atlanta
All permit types go through the Accela Citizen portal, except Express permits, which are accepted only in person (ATL311). The Office of Buildings sets a nonrefundable minimum application fee of $175, of which $25 funds technology, and permits needing plan review pay 50% of the total building permit fee up front (Atlanta Code, Appendix A). The fee is $7.00 per $1,000 of valuation. The Office of Buildings will not issue a building permit unless a notarized Contractor License Affidavit is on file (form OOB.ACE).
Atlanta exempts a lot of small work from permits, including interior doors and non-structural repairs under $10,000 total valuation (Work Exempt from Permit). That exemption does not apply to exterior work in a landmark or historic district. There, only repair work under $2,500 needs no Certificate of Appropriateness or permit. The Urban Design Commission regulates historic districts, landmark districts and conservation districts. The Office of Design, Historic Preservation answers questions at 404-546-0134 (ATL311).
Sandy Springs
A Residential Building Permit is required whenever an owner constructs, alters, enlarges or repairs a building. Permits may be obtained by licensed pros or by owners for their current permanent residence (Sandy Springs). Applications go through the Build Sandy Springs portal. Paying by card adds a 5% processing fee. (Sandy Springs). A resubmittal fee of $200 applies on the third resubmission.
Cobb County and Marietta
Cobb County's Inspections office enforces the building codes in the unincorporated areas. The county publishes a jurisdiction lookup map. (Cobb County). Since July 1, 2024, residential permit fees are calculated at $6.00 per $1,000 of estimated construction cost, plus a $15 technology fee (Cobb County). Building without a permit carries a penalty of double the permit fee, up to $1,000.
In the City of Marietta, a homeowner residential permit costs $5 per $1,000 of total construction cost with a $50 base fee. Applications go through SagesGov. (Marietta). Marietta does not let homeowners apply for mechanical, electrical or plumbing permits. The licensed professional must apply.
DeKalb County and Decatur
DeKalb County adopted the 2024 ICC codes effective January 1, 2026. It warns that a project inside an incorporated DeKalb city may have a different permitting authority. (DeKalb County). Homeowners doing work on their primary residence instead of hiring a contractor must submit a Homeowner's Affidavit. Contractors must be licensed by the State of Georgia, hold a Georgia business license, and have names matching on all licenses (DeKalb County guide).
Gwinnett County and Lawrenceville
Gwinnett issues building permits for unincorporated Gwinnett through its ZIP Portal. A homeowner may get a permit with proof of ownership and a signed Property Owner as Contractor Affidavit. (Gwinnett County). Gwinnett does not require a permit for cosmetic work such as painting, new flooring or cabinets. The City of Lawrenceville issues its own permits through the Licensing, Permits, and Plans Portal (Lawrenceville).
Lead paint around old door frames
Decatur has the oldest housing stock in the metro, with a median year built of 1975 and 53.9% of homes built before 1980 (Census Reporter, ACS 2020 to 2024). The City of Atlanta has about one home in eight built before 1940. Many door frames and trim in those houses carry paint from before 1978.
Georgia runs its own lead-safe program. Companies doing renovation, repair and painting that disturbs lead-based paint in homes built before 1978 must be certified by Georgia EPD, use certified renovators and follow lead-safe work practices (Georgia EPD). EPD does not accept EPA certifications, so ask for the Georgia certificate. Pulling an old frame and its casing often disturbs more than the small-repair limits.
How to check a door installer before you hire
Georgia licenses residential and general contractors through the Secretary of State. A residential contractor is anyone doing residential work where the total value of the work or the compensation exceeds $2,500 (O.C.G.A. 43-41-2). A contract signed with an unlicensed contractor who needed a license is unenforceable by that contractor, who also has no lien rights (O.C.G.A. 43-41-17). Roofers, painters, drywall contractors and repair handymen are not required to be licensed by the state (Consumer Ed, Georgia Attorney General).
- Look up the license at verify.sos.ga.gov. Under Licensing, then Licensee Search, then the Building & Contractors tab, then Residential and General Contractors.
- Check the business license under Business, then Search for a Business, on the same site.
- Ask for the door brand, material, glass type and whether it is pre-hung, in writing.
- Ask who pulls the permit and whether the price includes a new frame, sill pan and trim.
- For a garage door, confirm the installer tests the auto-reverse.
- Keep the deposit small. Georgia's consumer office says do not pay more than 25%, or at most one-third, of the total cost as a down payment. Insist on a written contract with start and completion dates.
Every installer in the GOLDGCP network passes six-step vetting: license verification, an insurance check, a background and business check, a portfolio review, client reference calls, and onboarding with a quality score. You pay in milestones, each one after you approve that stage. Read more about how milestone payments work.

Frequently asked questions
How much does door installation cost in Atlanta?
An entry door costs about $595 to $3,000 installed in Atlanta, double entry doors $1,300 to $5,550, a sliding patio door $1,000 to $3,400 and French doors $1,100 to $4,700. A garage door runs $595 to $3,000. A new frame adds $110 to $510.
Do I need a permit to replace a door in Atlanta?
It depends on the city or county that issues permits for your address. A same-size, same-type swap is often exempt or a simple over-the-counter permit. Widening the opening needs a building permit with plan review for the new header. Check the parcel's jurisdiction first.
Does a glass door need tempered glass in Georgia?
Yes. The Georgia residential code treats glass in swinging, sliding and bifold doors as a hazardous location, so it must be safety glass, tempered or laminated. Sidelights within 24 inches of the door and less than 60 inches above the floor usually need it too.
What door is required between the garage and the house in Atlanta?
A solid wood or steel door at least 1 3/8 inches thick, or a 20-minute fire-rated door, and it must be self-closing and self-latching. No door may open from the garage directly into a bedroom. A standard hollow-core door does not meet the rule.
Do I need historic approval for a new front door in Atlanta?
If the house is in an Atlanta landmark or historic district, yes. Exterior work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Urban Design Commission or Office of Design staff before the permit. Only repair work under $2,500 is exempt there.
What license does a door installer need in Georgia?
A residential contractor license from the Georgia Secretary of State is required when the work exceeds $2,500. Check it at verify.sos.ga.gov under Residential and General Contractors. Roofers, painters and handymen are not state-licensed, so a door installer should show the residential license.
How long does door installation take in Atlanta?
A same-size entry or patio door swap is usually a one-day job once the door is on site. A wider opening with a new header takes longer because of plan review, which can run several business days in most metro permit offices. Order the door first and confirm the lead time in writing.
How we calculate these prices
GOLDGCP starts from national price ranges for each job, taken from published 2026 cost guides and checked against local price guides where they exist. To get a local price, we multiply the national range by the construction cost factor for the metro from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Area Cost Factors (US average = 1.00). Where that table has no entry for a metro, we use the nearest listed location or the state value. For ZIP codes outside the 50 largest metros, the cost estimator uses the state's price level from the Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Price Parities. Ranges include labor and standard materials but not unusual site conditions, so a written quote after an inspection is always the final price.
