The short answer
A licensed electrician in Denver charges $53 to $135 an hour, plus a $105 to $210 service call. A 200-amp panel upgrade runs $1,350 to $2,950, and a Level 2 EV charger $790 to $2,750 installed. Xcel Energy's rules and your city's permit office set the schedule for any job that touches the meter.

Estimates for 2026, including labor and standard parts. Denver prices use the metro's construction cost factor of 1.05 (US average = 1.00) from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Area Cost Factors. Your quote depends on access, materials and the condition of the home.
Small jobs, like replacing a switch or adding a GFCI outlet in a bathroom, are mostly the service call plus an hour of time. A panel upgrade takes most of a day on site. The permit office and Xcel Energy set the rest of the schedule.
Use the cost estimator for a figure based on your ZIP code and your job.
Xcel Energy and why it matters
Most of the metro gets power from Xcel Energy. Any job that touches the meter involves the utility as well as the city. A new panel, a service change, a solar system or a battery needs Xcel's approval before the meter is set. Arvada's electrical page states that the city releases inspection information to Xcel Energy the day after the inspection is approved, and the applicant must then contact Xcel to complete the meter setup. Plan for a gap between the city's final inspection and the day the power comes back on.
Tell your electrician which utility you have before you collect quotes. The paperwork and the timeline depend on it.
Panel upgrades for EV chargers and heat pumps
Many Denver-area homes were wired for a household with no car charger and no electric heat. Adding a Level 2 charger, a heat pump or an induction range can push a 100-amp panel past its limit. Ask the electrician to run a load calculation for everything you plan to add at once. That way you pay for one upgrade instead of two.
Arvada requires an engineered, signed and stamped set of plans for any panel rated over 200 amps. If you are planning a 400-amp service, budget for engineering time on top of the electrical work.
What the panel work involves
A 200-amp upgrade means a new panel, new breakers, a grounding check and usually a new meter base. The city inspects the rough work and the final. Xcel then sets the meter. In Arvada, a residential service change permit costs $60. In Boulder, a service change only electrical permit costs $36.70.
Rebates and credits in 2026
Federal tax credits for home electrification ended: the IRS energy efficient home improvement credit covered improvements made through December 31, 2025 (IRS). A 2026 quote should not subtract them. Utility and state programs change often. Ask your electrician which Xcel Energy programs are open when you get the quote, and check the Colorado Energy Office for current statewide offers before you sign. Do not count on a rebate until the program confirms you qualify.
Solar and batteries in Denver
A rooftop solar system or a home battery needs two approvals: an electrical permit from your city and an interconnection agreement with Xcel Energy. Boulder treats solar arrays as electrical work and requires a single trade permit when solar is the only scope. Arvada charges $55 for a residential solar permit and $55 for a residential energy storage system permit.
Colorado also licenses solar installers separately. To perform photovoltaic installing in Colorado, you must be a licensed photovoltaic installer registered with the state, and the company must employ at least one NABCEP certified employee, according to the Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations. Ask for that registration as well as the electrical contractor license.
For a battery, ask the electrician where it will sit and whether the city wants a separate plan review. Battery placement rules vary by jurisdiction. Confirm with your permit office before the equipment is ordered.
Do you need a permit?
Yes, for nearly everything beyond swapping a fixture or a device. Colorado's State Electrical Board does not inspect electrical work in cities that run their own inspection program, and Denver is one of them, according to the Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations. In those cities you use the city's permit process rather than the state's.
If you hire an electrical contractor, the contractor is responsible for getting the permit. The state tells homeowners not to continue the permit application themselves once a contractor is hired.
The main permit offices in the metro charge the following for common electrical work:
| City | Typical electrical permit fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arvada | $60 service change; $55 EV charger; $55 solar; $55 battery storage | Plan review is 50% of the permit fee when electrical is not part of a combination permit; reinspection $125 |
| Boulder | $36.70 service change; $69.60 for a 1,000 to 1,499 sq ft home; $90.25 for 1,500 to 1,999 sq ft | Fees double on work started without a permit; 2.85% card service fee |
| Lakewood | Based on total valuation including labor and materials | Plan review is 65% of the permit fee; reinspection $80 an hour |
| Littleton | Set by the 2025 fee schedule (Resolution 2025-105) | Use tax and Arapahoe County Open Space Tax added |
| Douglas County (unincorporated) | $57 up to $2,000 of value, then $5 per $1,000 plus $57 | Inspection fee may double if the permit was not filed before work began; reinspection $47 |
| Adams County (unincorporated) | Based on project valuation | Contractors must register first; no registration fee |

Skipping the permit is expensive. Boulder doubles the electrical permit fee on work started or completed without an approved permit. Douglas County may charge twice the inspection fee when a permit was not filed before installation began. Arvada lists stop work orders, fines and mandatory demolition as possible outcomes of unpermitted work.
A separate permit is required for each detached structure on the same property, such as a garage, studio or barn, according to the state electrical board.
How to check an electrician before you hire
Colorado licenses electrical contractors through the Division of Professions and Occupations. To do electrical contracting in the state, a company must be a licensed electrical contractor registered with Colorado, and it must hold or employ a licensed master electrician as its responsible individual. That master electrician can serve as the responsible party for only one company.
The license ladder matters when you read a quote. A residential wireman license requires 4,000 hours of residential-only experience over at least two years. A master electrician license requires 10,000 hours over at least five years, one qualifying route. Journeyman, master and residential wireman licenses all require 24 hours of continuing education per three-year period, and all licenses expire on September 30 every three years.
Before you sign:
- Look up the company on the state's license lookup. Check that the electrical contractor registration is active and the name matches the quote.
- Check the city. Lakewood requires electrical contractors to register and provide state contractor and master licenses. Douglas County verifies state electrical licenses through DORA before issuing a permit and runs random on-site checks of licenses and apprentice ratios. Boulder requires Colorado DORA master electrician and electrical contractor certification.
- Ask who will be on the job and whether a licensed electrician will supervise. Boulder's code allows no more than one licensed electrician to supervise more than three apprentices at a job site.
- Get a written price that lists the permit and, for panel or solar work, who handles the Xcel Energy paperwork.
A handyman without a license cannot legally do the work. The state says it is a violation of law for anyone other than the homeowner who is not a registered electrical contractor to install an electrical project on your property. Homeowner's insurance may not cover damage caused by an uninsured worker.
If something goes wrong with a licensed electrician, you can file a complaint with the state Division of Professions and Occupations. The State Electrical Board is at 1560 Broadway, Suite 1350, Denver, CO 80202, phone 303-894-7800.
GOLDGCP checks each electrician's state license, insurance, business records and references before they get a job, and you pay in milestones as the work is approved. For more on how that works, see how we vet pros and payment protection.
Common electrical jobs in Denver homes
| Job | Denver price range | Permit and utility steps |
|---|---|---|

Frequently asked questions
How much does an electrician cost per hour in Denver?
Usually $53 to $135 an hour for a licensed electrician, plus a $105 to $210 service call. Rates here run about 5% above the national average. Evening, weekend and holiday calls cost more, and jobs that need a permit add the city fee.
How much does a panel upgrade cost in Denver?
Upgrading to 200 amps costs about $1,350 to $2,950 here. The city permit is extra, and Xcel Energy has to set the meter after the final inspection. In Arvada, a panel rated over 200 amps needs engineered plans.
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in Denver?
Yes. A new circuit for a charger is electrical work that needs a permit from your city. Arvada charges $55 for a residential EV charger permit. If the charger needs a service upgrade, Xcel Energy is involved too.
Does Colorado license electricians?
Yes. Electrical contractors must be registered with the state and must employ a licensed master electrician as the responsible individual. Journeyman, master and residential wireman licenses are issued by the State Electrical Board, and all expire on September 30 every three years.
Can a handyman do electrical work in Denver?
No. Colorado law says anyone other than the homeowner who is not a registered electrical contractor cannot install an electrical project on your property. Even small jobs that need a permit require a licensed contractor.
Who inspects electrical work in Denver?
The city does. Colorado's State Electrical Board does not inspect in cities that run their own electrical inspection program, and Denver is one of them. Arvada, Boulder, Lakewood, Littleton and Douglas County each run their own permit and inspection process.
Is there still a federal tax credit for electrical upgrades?
No, not for new work. The federal home electrification credits ended. A 2026 quote should not subtract them. Ask your electrician which Xcel Energy and Colorado Energy Office programs are open when you get the quote.
How we calculate these prices
GOLDGCP starts from national price ranges for each job, taken from published 2026 cost guides and checked against local price guides where they exist. To get a local price, we multiply the national range by the construction cost factor for the metro from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Area Cost Factors (US average = 1.00). Where that table has no entry for a metro, we use the nearest listed location or the state value. For ZIP codes outside the 50 largest metros, the cost estimator uses the state's price level from the Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Price Parities. Ranges include labor and standard materials but not unusual site conditions, so a written quote after an inspection is always the final price.
